Shishikan Dojo

Shorinjiryu Koshinkai Karatedo

Shishikan Dojo

Shishikan is a Shorinjiryu Karate school, based on Shorinjiryu Kenkokan Karate and has lineage to it’s founder Shinan Kori Hisataka (1907 – 1988)

The Dojo name was originally Shishikai, but was changed to “Shishikan” for consistency in naming of dojos within the Shorinjiryu Koshinkai Karatedo Australia organisation.

  Shishi        kan

Shishikan was named to incorporate two aspects that have strong importance and meaning in the life of the dojo instructor Tony Fletcher in his private life, military career and martial arts.

Shishikan (獅子館) has two main meanings

Shishi (獅子 Lion) and Kan (館 building, meeting place)

Incorporated into the dojo logo is the symbol of life’s balance, Yin Yang. A balance in life that can be shown by some of the following;

male/female, light/dark, hot/cold or life/death, it can also represent the hard/soft, fast/slow, circular/angular aspects of kata and in our martial arts

Yin and Yang should be seen as complementary and not as opposing forces, rather, they interact to form a whole unit greater than each separate part.

The Lion gives strength and protects the pride, the dualities of the Yin Yang provide balance and harmony to help us not only in our martial arts or chosen sport, but in our private and business life
